Our story
Jon Amyx began Downtown Barber in early 1987. It started as a one chair business and has grown substantially over the years. In 1999 Jons son Jay Amyx joined forces with him and has brought a new age and fresh ideas to the shop. Two other family members (Rachel and Tracy) joined the team and with over a decade of experience each they dominate their profession. We are a classic barbershop with a new age look. Our wall is adorned with memorabilia from all our local sports teams to keep your eyes and minds busy while you wait. With 10 full time barbers on hand we have something for everyone. Between great conversation and even better haircuts we exceed expectation. We have been a staple in Downtown Lawrence for years and will continue to serve the community we love.

Jon is a 3rd generation Barber. With many years under his belt he has seen hairstyles change many times over the years since he began cutting hair in 1975. He opened Downtown Barber in 1987 and has never looked back since. His ability to talk to people is the first thing you will notice about him. He is never at a loss for words, and his unforgettable sayings as you exit the shop means you leave not only with a great haircut but a smile on your face.

Jay is a 4th generation Barber and son of Jon aka. “The Old Man”. With over 23 years of experience he brings an attention to detail that customers love. He is a jack of all trades guy in the industry and shows that with every service provided. If he can’t do it then you don’t need it. He loves what he does and the people he does it for.

Rachel, also a 4th generation Barber is a huge part of why we are so strong as a business. She is arguably the shops best asset. She is an absolute force and staple of our shop. If it needs done, she can do it. She got her start over 15 years ago and she will continue to give great cuts as the years continue. If you want it done right she is your girl.

Megan is the artist of the group. Multitalented in the fact she can draw, paint, put a design in your hair and give you one hell of a haircut to boot. She has definitely broken out her shell and is quickly becoming one of the unforgettable faces of the shop. Her detail is strong and so are her abilities to provide you with exactly what you need. . Come check her out, you will not be disappointed.

Elizabeth Is our local area girl. She has been in the game for awhile and can kill a haircut. She always has a conversation ready to talk to you about. She is outspoken and strong willed, but she can always give you exactly what you ask for. She is a Lawrence girl now, however if you want to get a rise out of her, feel free to tease her about growing up in Topeka.

Stacy is a veteran Barber who has come to join us here. She has been around town for many years and has plenty of loyal followers. She can not only cut a great head of hair she is one hell of a baker as well. That’s right boys she can cut and cook. It doesn’t help our waistlines any but she will take even better care of her customers with good quality haircuts and styles.

Ellis aka “Elroy” has joined the crew here. He may be new to the shop but by no means is he new to town. Ellis is a life long Lawrence native who is known in many circles. His energy is what separates him from most. He has booming personality and will talk your ear off about anything and everything (Loves football, softball and family). Don’t miss the opportunity to get in his chair, hewill make you feel right at home and like you have known each other for years.

Rock is our now 5th generation welcomed to the barber industry. He is Jays oldest son and the old man’s oldest grandson . He has proven in a short time that the legacy he has come from has a definite advantage. Rock has a great personality and an eye for detail. He is the leader of a new era and younger generation of Barbers at our shop. Before we know it Rock and his friends will be the face of this industry and continue a Barber Lineage with pride and excellent workmanship. Come check him out today.

Jacob is one of our new era barbers. He might be young but this kid can cut. He is from Top City but we don’t hold that against him. He has huge personality and he will keep you coming back with his conversations and his skills. Loves to cut fades but will hook you up with any clipper cut you want. Make Sure he hits you with his pattened phrase “BOOM” before you leave. Come check this guy out

Logan is a KC kid. He graduated barber school with Rock and Levi. He has a full spectrum of abilities. This guy can do it all and his skillset grows by the day. He is part of the 4 horseman squad in here (Rock,Logan,Jacob,Levi) he might be young but should never be overlooked. Definitely give him a shot. He will not disappoint.

Levi is a born and bread local boy. Graduated from Free State High School right here in Lawrence. He is also no stranger to the haircut industry. He comes from a legacy as well. Levi has some standout talent and is definitely spreading his wings daily. He may not talk your ear off but he will get you looking good for whatever is you have coming up. He is worth the stop.

If you never met him , then you unfortunatly missed out on one hell of an experience. Toad is not a Barber, but he was a massive part of the barbershop. He had a hot mouth and would flip you off at the drop of a hat if you saw him on his moped. Toad used to run errands for us all day and was absolutely hell on wheels. Call him ”Tim or buddy” and you will absolutely get the Toad hello aka “the bird”. We unfortunately lost Toad in 2023. He will be a legend in this shop forever.
